Outbuilding Renovation

Brief: Stage one of a renovation in Ilchester, Somerset. The out building was once used to house animals, but the client would like it to be made habitable. The brief is to make the building habitable.

Rake out old lime mortar, and repoint stonework using lime. Rebuild internal gable end wall using blue lias and install an oak lintel.

Materials: Made of blue lias, a geological formation in southern, eastern and western England and parts of South Wales, part of the Lias Group. The Blue Lias consists of a sequence of limestone and shale layers, laid down in latest Triassic and early Jurassic times, between 195 and 200 million years ago.

Pointed using lime mortar, which allows the building to breathe, and also protects the stone.
